ALFISIG May 2019 Meeting

Presenter: Elizabeth Larson, PMP, CBAP, CSM
Topic: Is the PM’s Role Diminishing With Self-Directed Teams?

When we think of self-directed teams, we often imagine a team completing tasks with little or no direction. And we all too often think of a project manager (PM) leading teams with an authoritarian style, so the concept of a PM leading self-directed teams seems impossible. This presentation explores this seeming contradiction and explains why it is neither a contradiction nor impossible.

Specifically, this presentation discusses:

  • The concept of servant leadership and its relationship to a self-directed team
  • The role of a PM on all projects
  • The nature of leadership
  • Misconceptions related to both self-directed teams and project managers

Learning Objectives

Attendees will be able to discuss:

  • What project management and self-directed teams are and are not
  • The nature of true leadership
  • How PMs can effectively lead self-directed teams
