Community in Action - Inside Airport Operations

Business Acumen

As part of PMICAC’s 2026 Community in Action theme, this experience highlights how project management supports the systems that power Birmingham’s infrastructure and economic growth.

The airport represents a complex, live operational environment where planning, coordination, and execution occur continuously. This experience connects project professionals directly to that reality.

Through a guided exploration of airport operations, infrastructure, and ongoing initiatives, participants will gain insight into the systems, projects, and partnerships that support one of the region's most critical transportation assets. The experience will include a leadership discussion featuring Ingrid Hairston, A.A.E., PMP, Chief Revenue Officer, and Kim Hunt, Vice President of Communications, providing a behind-the-scenes perspective on organizational strategy, stakeholder alignment, infrastructure investments, operational priorities, and regional impact.

Attendees will examine how airport leaders balance competing priorities while delivering initiatives that support airline growth, passenger experience, business development, regional connectivity, and economic development. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how executive leadership, strategic decision-making, and project management intersect to support organizational objectives within the aviation industry.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how airport leaders prioritize and align initiatives to support organizational goals and regional economic development.
  • Explore the role of project management in delivering infrastructure, operational, and technology-related initiatives within a live airport environment.

Speakers

Chief Revenue Officer
I am an experienced airport business development professional, focused on creating and expanding revenue generation, forecasting demand for new services, and understanding and translating customer trends and behavior to create customer engagement. I specialize in identifying new and non-traditional revenue opportunities, analyzing business options and identifying the intersection of airport opportunities and stakeholder interests. My core business development competencies include: Strategic Planning, Program Development, Team Leadership, Decision Analysis, Negotiation, and Project Management.

Vice President of Communications
Early in my career as a journalist, I loved the idea of contributing in some small way to the greater good. By telling stories, showing people things they'd never seen, taking people to places they'd never been, and yes - exposing things to the public that might have been purposely hidden, I went to work everyday feeling as though I was helping people. My desire to make a difference transitioned to the world of travel and transportation when I accepted a marketing position at the airport in my hometown. It was an accidental second career full of lots of learning and exciting challenges. (a pandemic! Are you serious?) I went to graduate school, honed my skills, and became certified in the world of Executive airport management. Public service is a noble profession and I have enjoyed using my skills and talent to be a builder in my community. I also continue my quest to find a balance that can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Our health is everything! And if 2020 and 2021 have taught us anything...it's that we are in charge of what we do and "how" we do on this planet. I work hard, play hard, and love networking with people as we find ways to make a difference.
